The Cockle Train

Passengers have been enjoying this unique journey through coastal dunes with ocean views since 1887 when the steam trains of the region were soon recognised as 'cockle trains'. The train's close proximity to the foreshore where abundant amounts of the shellfish known as cockles are found, made an ideal name for the trains. Cockles have long been used for fishing bait by many South Australian anglers.
